Springs do not necessarily exist in the form we are familiar with, but they are widely used in everyday life as vital components within a variety of apparently necessary tools. This is because springs have the property of resilience, something which allows them to generate force, store energy, absorb vibration, and much more. From small paper clips, clothes pegs for the hanging up of clothes, to vehicle parts and even the earthquake proofing of buildings – though often hidden from direct view – the human world is constantly being sprung into action.
I myself have been noticing springs ever since the double bed-size mattress that I have lived with intimately with for almost a decade began failing to support my body the way a regular mattress should. When a bed breaks down and you can’t get a good night sleep, the physical discomfort will creep into other invisible places and consequently manifests itself in everyday activities: fatigue, inability to concentrate, bad mood, impact on work performance, and so on. Similarly, in an extension of this context, the spring’s elasticity can be viewed in multiple layers such as resilience, recoil, response force or toughness.
Another use of springs is as a measuring tool. When the force exerted on the spring exceeds its elastic limit, or when the force applied lasts too long and the elasticity becomes fatigued, these scenarios could all be the cause of a broken bed. In this work, the force applied to the spring is used as a measure of the distance between two objects, through changes in its appearance, it is used as a metaphor of the possible relations between various forces.
