Media coverage

Note:

On the road, engines of cars and motorbikes run fast, heat colliding with noise. But as we turn into Pasar Simpang Dago, what lingers in the air are only brief exchanges between people, a mix of natural and artificial colors, a few puddles scattered on the ground, and the faint scent of animals—noticeable, yet not overwhelming. Inside the market: straight ahead—right turn—left turn—another right, or perhaps a left? It becomes a matter of choosing a destination.

Mr. H, who has been here since the 1960s, says the market has been declining as society’s way of buying groceries and daily goods has shifted. The crowds have grown fewer. I am reminded of that river—the river that nourished fertile lands, the lands that sustained their people, the children running and playing on the slopes, and the mothers who watched over them.

Here and there, as we move across space, we also move across time. Within the torrents of time, space continues to be developed, leading to uneven distribution of resources. Residents who can see the river cannot obtain clean water; bodies only a hundred meters away from their destination cannot quite arrive; the land, in the eyes of capitalists, waits only to be profited from… Here and there, the space in which we live is always shaped by forces outside ourselves.

Again, I think of that river—the children playing with toys on the slopes, the kites flying across the sky. Straight ahead—right turn—left turn—forward, or back? It becomes a matter of choosing a destination.

Note:
In Sundanese, Dago means “waiting.” It is said that in the past, villagers living in the north would wait for one another (padago-dago) before heading together to the city market. Over time, this practice gave rise to the place name.(https://komunitasaleut.com/2025/07/04/dongeng-bandung-terap-fest-dago-coblong-simpang/)
