我的外婆今年90歲,仍然有著非常好的記憶力。她對她的外婆也有著鮮明的印象,她記得她外婆裹的小腳,也記得她早上總是要含一顆冰糖,記得她為一家人準備的最後一頓早餐,是用陶甕裝的稀飯。

這些記憶,成為她分享故事給我們時的材料。她說過,因為父親是日本學校的老師,所以她跟姊姊成為少數讀小學校的台灣人,也成為被欺負的對象。她說,有時候上課都要躲空襲,當空襲警報響起就要跑到防空洞裡,密閉的狹隘空間在未來成為她不能克服的情景。她說,小學沒唸完,為了躲空襲跑到陽明山上投靠親戚,往下所見是到處都是火災的台北‥‥‥。

「游泳池在哪裡?」是她七十幾年後回到這個建築物裡的提問; 而當我站在當代館內,透過磚牆之間的窗戶往建成國中看去,這些生命故事忽然有了座標。

呼應展覽《反覆演練》所探討的,關於性別身體是如何透過社會各種制約而被建構出來,並不斷不斷的被實踐著,我的作品則希望由關懷及陪伴的角度切入跨世代的身體經驗與記憶,透過大歷史中小人物的故事,思考身體與歷史、敘事與建構的關係。

My grandmother is 90 years old this year and still has an exceptional memory. She still recalls her own grandmother vividly: the bound feet, the rock sugar she would suck on each morning, and the last breakfast she ever prepared for the family—porridge served in a clay pot.

These memories have become her material for storytelling. She once told us that because her father was a teacher at a Japanese school, she and her sister were among the few Taiwanese children enrolled in elementary school—making them easy targets for bullying. She recalled how classes were sometimes interrupted by air raids, and at the sound of the sirens, they would rush into narrow, sealed shelters—spaces that later came to haunt her with a fear she could never quite shake. Before she could finish elementary school, she fled to Yangmingshan to take refuge with relatives. From the hillside, she could see the city of Taipei burning below.

“Where’s the swimming pool?” she asked, more than seventy years later, returning to this building.
As I stood inside the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, looking through the window between the brick walls toward Jian Cheng Junior High School, her stories suddenly found a fixed point—an axis on the map of lived memory.

In response to the exhibition Re-her-sal: Preview, which explores how gendered bodies are shaped, disciplined, and repeatedly enacted through social structures, my work attempts to approach intergenerational bodily experience and memory through care and companionship. By tracing the lives of “small” figures within the current of large-scale history, the work reflects on how bodies and histories, narratives and constructions, are intimately entangled.
